Yes, I feel it’s time I took myself on a journey through self help tutorials and tonights one was to brush up my Photoshop skills courtesy of PSDTUTS.

“In this tutorial, I created drawn elements, using design brushes, brought them into Photoshop, and merged them into a unique poster composition that feels hand-made, stylistically unified, and personalized. The techniques here are focused on creating an original artistic illustration.”

Christmas By Color

Just found out last night that out of the best of a 1000 entries for international poster competition, Christmas by Color, I made the Nice List which can be viewed right here. The competition works by uploading a hexadecimal colour value that represents Christmas to me with a statement that explains the choice. Fingers crossed vote for Pedro and all that malarkey. I’ll wait to see if I’ve made the final cut, as far as I’m aware there are only 250 entries to make the poster though at any rate I’m buying one!

I also was linked to this blog which has free retro icon set. I’m especially like the old GameBoy!

My Tar Pit

Thought I should mention this, cause it’s been a while since I got ‘em.

Anywho, I was at the Black Market in the Black Box Belfast, a few Sundays ago, turns out its coming round again this Sunday the 14 December. I would encourage everyone to go as it’s such a great place to buy old records, magazines, new t-shirts, art, sculptures, food!!!

Last time I was there I picked up this little guy in the street from Belfast (and international) artist mytarpit,

I thought it was very neat, when I was told to go hunting around the area for some “canvases,” I was expecting some large feck-off sized pieces, not a lil match box sized piece..even better!

I got a mention on the mytarpit blog for my find, sounds like he’s from my neck of the woods, “’bout ye!”

Hope to get down again this sunday, may buy another print if my sting of an iPod Touch doesn’t cripple me poor.

Google Reader Skins

Do you like to read? Google read? Yes I do, and there’s nothing better than getting all those feeds in one place, the trouble is though that Google’s design for Reader, while minimal, can get a bit boring. So why not try and paint it up in a different minimal style, introducing Helvetireader a lovely skin that makes Google Reader that ever bit fancier.

Steps

Use Firefox
Install the Greasemonkey extension
Run the Helvetireader script with this link
Enjoy clean efficient reading

7 Firefox3 t-shirts

I am a collector of t-shirts, big ones small ones some as big as your noggin! I don’t know what it is, something about getting a new t-shirt and it designed all nicely, like they are fine wines they just get better as you get older, which is why I love some naff stuff.

Here are 7 of the new Firefox3 tshirts for the hardcore Firefox fans - they don’t look that bad either.

I have to admit, I would go and buy #7, purely because its so simple and looks the strongest out of the lot.

Visual Communication

Today’s workshop came from Visual Communication lecturer Liam McComish. I found it a completely interesting and inspiring class about typography and seeing how the second years in the Vis. Com. class are putting together a book of designed fonts. The experience about being a design author and not a designer for clients.

Liam went on to talk about Neubau Modul, a German book of type designs based on five simple shapes:

Circle
Triangle
Pill
Hexagon
Square

What the book was trying to illustrate was that, simple things can lead onto big things. A simple concept can grow into a successful reality (in the case of the book, simple shapes can lead onto intricate shapes and marks through the use of repetition, pattern and exclusion). This was something Liam was wanting us to realise as designers and artists, that we should try to be entrepreneurial in our goals, not necessarily concerned with money, but with creating success.

It got me thinking that I should try and be a bit more practical with my practice. Produce physical objects, even drawings/illustrations, at the moment I am still producing work digitally.
